Abstract Photography – Composition Skills For Great Abstract Images
Posted by: | CommentsAbstract images are fun to create. In addition, some of them can be quite impressive. However, some skill is required to create really impressive abstract images. Composition is one of the most important skills. Composition establishes how the form, color, and curves are positioned inside an image. There are many different ways to handle composition. This article is too short to perform a comprehensive review of composition. However, three different aspects of composition, as they relate to abstract images, will be covered.
* Rule of Thirds
* Golden Triangle
* No Rules

Golden Triangle Another approach to composition is the golden triangle. With the golden triangle, a diagonal is drawn from one corner of an image to the opposite corner. Then, lines are drawn from the other two corners such that they intersect at right angles with the diagonal. The center of interest is located at the intersections of these lines.

No Rules: While the rule of thirds and the golden triangle can create some great abstract images, one of the great things about abstract photography is that it is not always necessary to follow the rules. Sometimes, it is just best to go with whatever sparks your imagination.
Applying the Art of Subtraction
People tend to react to abstract photography on an instinctual or emotional level. Therefore, to create great abstract images, all one has to do is remove everything that does not, in some way, strengthen the viewer’s emotional reaction. This is the art of subtraction.
What process can be used to create an image that imparts an emotion? The following process works well: 1) identify the emotion, 2) select the elements in the image that serve to bolster the emotion and use them in the image, and 3) subtract all other elements from the image.
A natural response might be to ask why this is so important. The answer is that items in an image that help the image communicate its emotion strengthen the image. All other items serve only to dilute the image .In short, all things that do not strengthen the emotion of an image weaken the image.
In Summary
Great compositions lead to great abstract images. Of course, there is a lot more to learn about abstract photography.

Are You Looking For Original Artwork Or Paintings?
Posted by: | CommentsHave you looked at your walls lately, or at your windows? A room without paintings is as dismal as a room without windows. Maybe you have always had this hidden desire to purchase an original art piece for this reason exactly, but you were repulsed by the high expense quoted at auctions for artwork. Don’t be discouraged by that, there are many exciting original works of art to be had at prices to fit almost any budget. Today, original artwork can be purchased at prices below $10.
The painting you will own will be unique, it won’t be on anyone else’s wall. When you buy an original piece of art, you are buying so much more than just some paint haphazardly strewn on a canvas. Instead, you have purchased a moment from the life of an artist, something precious that you share with the creator of your painting. Owning an original painting that you love is an extraordinary experience. The canvas holds a small trace of the artist’s experiences.
Knowing where to find good original art is essential to getting the best price. First, you need to find out what your specific tastes are so that you can establish what you want. A great place to start is by visiting any local art museums. You will have to view good art for an extended period of time to acquire recognition of the brilliance of it, and also to establish what you like and dislike about it.
Always begin with art that appeals to you; otherwise your taste will never mature. Don’t buy the art just because of the value. The artwork will become a constant fixture in your home, even if you decide its no longer for you at some point in the future. When you purchase a painting, it should at least appeal to you at that moment.
You are, naturally, most likely to find high-quality original art at galleries; for this reason you should become familiar with local galleries and the kind of paintings they sell. Make sure to ask questions, get to know the artist and what went into the piece of art. Art dealers tend to focus on certain types of art. See, they’ve learned to focus on the art you like, no matter the ‘investment opportunity.’ Certain dealers are experts in certain types of art so you would go to them for a certain artist or style. Art dealers tend to have a group of artists with whom they work. Those artists are considered in that dealer’s “stable.” Find out which dealers work with which artists, the styles and types each on handles. If you see a piece you like, ask around about that artist’s background and credentials. Furthermore, you might even want to meet the artist if he’s a local, so make sure that you examine the piece of art carefully.
Since you are new to the art scene, you want to make sure that a dealer is not trying to pass off a counterfeit, stolen, or overly priced piece. This is less likely to happen in low price ranges than high, less likely with contemporary works than with older ones. Check out the gallery’s standing in the community and find out if they have a good reputation; even if they do, you might want to do a little extra homework to make sure the art was obtained legally and is actually an original. Museums can be a good source of information on galleries; for the most part, they will know if a particular gallery is trustworthy or not.
Auction houses are another means of purchasing art. Contemporary art works are found less often at auction houses. You may, however, be able to find an excellent older works such as paintings and sculptures at great prices. If you are viewing your art purchases as an investment, proceed with caution. The most common venue for fraudulent art are auction houses, especially the second and third tier ones. Granted, these auction houses will, in very small print, warn potential buyers that they are not responsible for ensuring that their artwork is genuine. They also aren’t very worried about this. You should always be particularly careful with deals that seem to good to be true like unbelievable deals on work from artists that is usually very expensive; the art will usually be damaged or fake.
My recommendations are the same whether you have just started or have been collecting for years. Look as much as possible, frequent galleries and museums and educate yourself. Make friends in the art community and Consult them, especially, if yon are making a major investment. Be wary of fraudulent sellers. And, last but not least, only get what you like.

Creating Dramatic Abstract Images With Your Digital Camera

Definition
Abstract photography exhibits subjects in a way that is not a literal interpretation. A photographer might create abstract photography by taking photos of an unusual object or the photographer might photograph a common object in an unconventional manner.
Wherever You Are
Another big plus with abstract photography is that you can capture abstract images just about anywhere you are. Whether you are at home, work, the beach, or a national forest, you will be able to discover abstract image possibilities.
Skills to Develop
Of course, abstract photography does require some skills. In that regard, it is no different than any other field of photography. The first thing that you need to do is to teach yourself what to look for. So, what should you look for? Try looking for interesting curve, colors, patterns, or shapes. These often provide great abstract opportunities. In other words, look for saturated colors, elegant curves, interesting shapes, or unusual patterns

A couple of techniques that work well when creating abstract images are blurring and moving in close. As the name implies, the blurring technique blurs the image. Of course, this is done intentionally. This technique is excellent for those times when you need to create a dreamy or romantic image. So, it is important to choose your subject matter carefully for this technique. The blurring can be achieved by placing something in front of the lens (such as panty hose) or deliberately moving the camera during the exposure. Other photography fans prefer to add the blur when editing the image in the computer.
Moving in close is also a very good technique for creating great abstract images. It is probably one of the most popular abstract photography techniques. The real key is to move in very close to the subject and photograph only a part of the subject instead of the entire subject. You might try photographing a portion of a leaf. A close up of the texture of a fruit might also make a good subject. Finally, you could photograph a few raindrops on a small section of a spider’s web. When creating abstract images, your most important skill is your creativity.
Try Things Out
You need to try out a lot of different things to find the ones that create the really impressive images. If you are using a digital camera, you have a big advantage. With a digital camera, you are able to take lots of shots. After all, after you buy the camera, all those shots are virtually cost-free. Another advantage of digital is the monitor. It enables you to see the results of your work immediately. This allows you to re-shoot if necessary.
Conclusion
There is one more point that should be covered before we close. Make sure that you have lots of fun. So, go get your camera and begin making some beautiful images. Then, make sure to show them to everybody.

Abstract Photography – The Essentials For Capturing Impressive Abstract Images
Posted by: | CommentsAbstract photography can create some very impressive photos. However, people tend to perceive abstract images a bit differently than they do regular images. This is because abstract images depend more on form, color, and curves than they do on image detail. This can cause a problem for photographers because most photographers think primarily in terms of image detail when they are assessing photographic opportunities. On the other hand, if we want to create great abstract images, we need to learn to view the world in a different way.
Abstract Photography Definition
There is no standard, universally accepted definition of abstract photography. Actually, it is not easy to create a clear-cut definition of an abstract concept. However, for the purposes of this article, it is necessary to create a definition in order to put some boundaries around the topic. This makes it easier to determine what falls within the domain of the subject matter. Thus, for this article, abstract photography will be defined as photography that:
* Does not represent the subject in a literal way.
* Communicates primarily through form, color, and curves rather than image detail.
Why Create Abstract Images
Before we start creating any images, it is important to understand why we should even consider creating abstract images. After all, there are plenty of other photographic opportunities out there.
There are two primary reasons. First, as was previously mentioned, abstract photography can create very impressive images. This is really all the justification that is needed. Then again, there is another reason. Opportunities for abstract images can be found just about anywhere. So, we can create abstract images at home and around our neighborhood. It isn’t necessary to travel to other locations to capture images (as is the case with many other types of photography such as landscape photography).
Essentials
Abstract photography has three essentials: form, color, and curves. It is important that an abstract photographer think in terms of these essentials.

It might seem like it would be nice to have a list of what makes a good form. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t really help much. The reason is that abstract photography is an instinctual form of photography. That means that people tend to react to abstract photography on an emotional level. So, it is necessary to approach form similarly. Consequently, it is necessary to find forms that create an emotional reaction in people. When we get a “Wow, look at that” reaction, we have probably found a strong form.
Color: Color is important because it grabs the attention of the viewer. It also stimulates the viewer’s perceptual system. Furthermore, color serves to hold the viewer’s attention. Once the viewer’s attention does start to wander, the color will, likely, bring the viewer’s attention back.
One way to use color is to use a saturated or intense color. Another method of using color that can produce very dynamic images is to use contrasting color.

The second way that curves can be used is more intangible. With this use of curves, the curves do not point in the direction of the center of interest. Actually, the curves do not point at any particular object. Rather, the curves just wander through the image, but they do so in a graceful or dynamic way. Even though the curves do not point at any specific object, they still control the viewer’s attention. Basically, the viewer’s attention roams back and forth along the curves. Consequently, the viewer’s attention stays on the image.
In Summary
Form, color, and curves provide us with a great start to producing some impressive abstract photos. On the other hand, there is a lot more to explore about abstract photography.

A Few Quick Hints For Photography Techniques
Posted by: | CommentsIf you think that the way to take a great picture is merely by aiming and shooting the object, then you are vitally wrong my friend! If taking great photos are truly that simple, many camera makers will be put out of business! Truth is, we take pictures to remind us or to take note of something that did happened, and thus making sure that the pictures you took can still create the feeling of that particular event when viewing it later on is something you should aim to do.
If you’re interested in more advance photography skills and techniques, this article can offer you some great tips that you can try, who knows it might even make you money in the process.
One of the easiest way to create these photos is to remember to always includes at least 3 elements in your photo. Taking a picture of the beautiful lake where you happen to stay on top of during a vacation might not exactly recreate the beautiful moment you remembered. So instead of just taking a picture of the lake, try to give the photo more perspective by including other elements in it. One way to do so is to give the viewer a perspective of just how majestic the lake is by including small boats, birds, or any visible fishes on the surface. This way you can appreciate just how majestic the lake is, as compared to just taking a photo with the lake with no other elements that the viewer can compare or have a perspective on.
Another great way to improve on your photo taking skill is to never limit yourself with just one view, or one angle. Taking pictures from different angle can sometimes shed new light into the object where we do not normally see. You can do this by physically moving around the object that you’re taking, this way your photos will look unique and completely different from others!
You can also improve on how one particular object looks and fits in to it’s surrounding by taking a closer shot of it. Instead of the normal and boring top down view, you can even try lying down the floor when, as this will give you another view of the object. If you’re taking a picture of a flower, getting closer to it and try to capture it along with the rest of the garden, this way it can show just how beautiful the flower is in it’s context.
That being said, you should always try to experiment with different angles and elements when it comes to photo taking, as there are usually no right or wrong in terms of taking photos. What you want to do is to make sure you’re consciously looking for ways to improve as it can really improve your viewing pleasure in the future.

Learning Digital Photography Online – 7 Portrait Photography Tips
Posted by: | CommentsPhotography is one of the most well-liked interests as well as professions on the planet. There is nothing like recording fragments of reality and preserving it on film. There are many kinds of digital photography, but one of the most in-demand is portrait digital photography.
An excellent family portrait is described as an image with a quality picture that catches both the physical features as well as character of the subject. Taking good portraits is extremely challenging simply because a digital photographer requires a subject matter expressing an upbeat character which also reflects sensitivity and liveliness. There are numerous elements which digital photography fanatics need to know when capturing the perfect portrait.
1. Revelation of the subject’s personality For the portrait to be regarded as good, it should capture at least one element which shows the features and traits associated with the actual subject matter and also one that catches his / her personality. The image should uncover an important part associated with the subject’s character that may be identifiable by people who know them. Therefore, it is quite difficult for a portrait to display the character of his subject matter if they have only met for the first occasion.
2. The right time to snap pictures Definitely, the photo shoot ought to begin when the subject matter is comfortable and at ease with his / her appearance and surroundings. By no means shoot if your subject is tense or uneasy, since it may reflect in the actual photos. There isn’t any guideline which states a discussion should end any time picture taking commences, it could still continue particularly if it causes the subject open up much more for the digital photographer. Don’t forget that the subject matter does not have to smile for making the portrait look good. Quite often, a considerate or a determined expression is desired since it discloses much more of the subject’s character.
3. Preparedness of the photographer This will be significant considering it’s the digital photographer who will take control of a photo shoot. The subject matter should sense that the person behind the digital camera knows what he is doing and is skilled sufficiently to tell the subject matter exactly how to pose. The digital photographer himself should be ready and tranquil during the entire session.
4. Right kind of illumination Probably the best lighting that is used for capturing the character of the subject will be natural daylight. The variety of lighting options created by outside types of conditions provides a lot more creative freedom for any photographer. Having the subject take a seat near the window can also generate fantastic results. The only downside of natural light is that it’s not continuously consistent. Because of this, just about all photographers must utilize artificial illumination. All photography fans should have studio flashes. Also, the placement of the photographer in relation to the subject matter can also be altered in order to maximize the lighting on hand.
5. Relevant background In other words, a poor background can easily adversely affect a picture. At all times pay close attention on the scenery behind the subject matter when framing photographs. There are many innovative choices that be applied while shooting out-of-doors. The subject may be made to pose next to or facing multi-colored flowers or leaves, the sea or even the sky. To cut back the effect of a unproductive setting, a photographer can make use of long lenses or an extensive aperture. For in the house, one can possibly use black or gray material for the background, then adding colored transparent plastics covering the flashes to alter coloring.
6. Utilization of costumes and props Portraits usually are an infrequent photograph of a subject, and good costumes could make the family portrait much more interesting as well as priceless. You don’t constantly need to use a full costume, occasionally a hint of it can make wonders, for example hats or scarves. Props ought to be utilized very carefully, and should not draw attention away from the primary subject of the photograph. A prop should establish the natural pose and disposition of the people being photographed.
7. Framing The kind of framing may already create the picture desired by the photographer. It is recommended that photographs be cropped before picture taking. The picture should be examined a few seconds prior to pressing the shutter. Photos that aren’t essential could be excluded from the shot. Making the perfect family portrait might look tough initially however these ideas can help newbies so they are able to shoot better photos.

How To Use Lines To Create Powerful Photo Compositions
Posted by: | CommentsA very powerful method of improving the composition of photos is the use of lines. Properly used, lines can significantly increase the impact of images.
Lines affect composition in a couple of ways. First, lines help to create mood in an image. By affecting mood, lines can add some emotional substance to an image. Second, lines can lead a viewer’s eye through an image. By controlling a viewer’s eye, lines help to keep the viewer’s attention centered on the image. We will take a look at four types of lines: horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, and jagged and irregular lines.
Horizontal Lines
Horizontal lines are associated with a lack of change. Basically, they tend to create a feeling of homeostasis. Horizontal lines can create an image that appears locked at some point in time. We can use this to our advantage when we want to create a sense of timelessness in an image. Horizontal lines can also be used to create some contrast with other more dynamic objects in an image. Examples of horizontal lines can be found in buildings, skylines, and fallen trees.

Vertical lines can create a mood of stability or a mood of peace depending on how the lines are used. When vertical lines create a sense of stability, they function similarly to horizontal lines. Thus, vertical lines can create a feeling of substance or solidity. Examples of this use of vertical lines can be found in vertical rock, power poles, and the lines found in skyscrapers.
Vertical lines are also excellent for creating a tranquil mood. Examples of this use of lines can be found in forest trees enveloped in fog, aged fence posts on a lonely plain, and a solitary figure standing on a quiet beach.
Diagonal Lines
Diagonal lines suggest a sense of activity. They tend to make an image more dynamic. Consequently, diagonal lines are very powerful as they tend to grab the attention of a person viewing an image. The attention of the viewer tends to rove back and forth along the diagonal lines. Diagonals can be created not just from objects such as tree branches or streams but also from areas of color. For example, a section of color on a flower could form a diagonal that would add impact to the flower image. Examples of diagonals are all around us: streets, canals, waves, and the stems of flowers can all be utilized as diagonals.
Jagged and Irregular Lines
Finally, we have the jagged or irregular lines. These types of lines often convey a feeling of unease, tension, or fear. An image that uses a lot of jagged or irregular lines can create a negative feeling in the viewer. Consequently, jagged or irregular lines should be used when we want to create disquiet or agitation in the viewer. Examples are to be found in roots, a crocodile’s teeth, stark mountain peaks, and the twisted metal of an automobile wreck.

When used properly, lines can do more than create mood. They can also be used to direct the attention of the viewer of an image. In order to use lines for this purpose, two rules should be followed. First, the lines should always point toward the most important object in an image. This will help to direct the viewers’ attention to that object. Second. The lines should never point outside the image as this will lead the viewer’s attention outside the image. This will, likely, result in the viewer losing interest in an image. Thus, the image will be weakened.
Summary
Since lines are such a powerful compositional tool, we should learn to think of the effect of lines when we compose our images.
However, lines are just the start. There is much more to creating great photographic compositions. To learn more composition techniques, check out Ron’s three part article series on Advanced Photographic Composition.
